William Lee: Get on your ass!
Line of Events
In 1950s Mexico City, an American immigrant in his forties lives a lonely life in a small American community. However, the arrival of a young student pushes the man to finally establish a meaningful relationship with someone.. Daniel Craig eventually convinced Luca Guadagnino to cast Drew Starkey after watching Guadagnino’s audition tapes and saying “This is it” when he saw Starkey..
Or what’s left of it after four years in the Navy
The Graham Norton Show starring: Daniel Craig/Nicola Coughlan/Jesse Eisenberg/Kieran Culkin/Flo (2024). I wasn’t planning on seeing Queer in the theater and was going to wait until it came out on streaming, but a friend of mine wanted to see it, so I went. I’m actually glad I did, because it’s a very interesting and visually beautiful film.
This can be difficult, as most of the story is told through metaphors and strange/weird/hard to read visuals
As with most Burroughs stories, there will be characters involved in heavy drug use, so I was aware of that and expected that most of the story would be told through the character’s clouded/under the influence/drugged eyes. In “Queer” it all worked out pretty well, and while I expected to perhaps leave the theater confused and bewildered, I actually went in satisfied. Trent Reznor produced all the music and I think he did an incredible job and most of the music really hit me emotionally.
All of the other characters were solid supporting and contributing
As for the acting, Craig gave a very solid performance in a role that was difficult to play, but I think he did a really good job. Jason Schwartzman was great and his character brought a much-needed levity to this film. Guadagnino’s direction was well done and I will say after seeing some of his work that he has a special way of blending the camera, lighting and music so perfectly during the lighter and gentler moments of his films to really create atmosphere without being too obvious to stifle the moment.
That should be kept in mind
I do think that the third part in the jungle could have benefited from some sensible editing as I felt it went on too long or maybe it shouldn’t have been set in the jungle at all? Queer is not an “easy” film to watch and it is not for everyone. In any case, I was pleasantly surprised by how effective, interesting and exciting Queer is and I think it is worth watching.
