The Maynards and their children lead an almost ideal billionaire family life. Amon is a passionate hunter, but he doesn’t shoot animals, because the family’s wealth allows them to live completely free of consequences..
Watched it at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival
Ayn Rand: The point is, who will stop me?. Director Daniel Hösl and Juliana Niemann clearly have an interesting satirical take on the wealthy class, and while there are some good ideas, it feels unfinished and not as strong as the film thinks it is.
Many of the performances are solid, and some of the children’s performances are a little weak
Throughout the film, the production design, cinematography and color rendering are superb and truly beautiful as they help to capture the atmosphere and essence of the characters. The direction from Hösl and Niemann, although a little messy, has a clear vision of what style and atmosphere they are approaching.
As if there were some good ideas that didn’t really reach their desired potential
The storytelling is a good concept, but unfortunately it doesn’t feel as strong as it seems because the narrative feels underdeveloped in some themes and the characters don’t seem interesting or compelling enough to connect with emotionally. There are certain moments that are shocking, sharp and quite strange, and I understand where the filmmakers and their vision are coming from.
But it could be stronger
But it doesn’t feel fully deserved, and the style feels too much like something out of Ruben Östlund or Michael Haneke. Overall, it’s not bad, as there are some moments that I really regret.
