It’s as if negative reviews are swept under the rug
Quoted in WatchMojo: The 10 Most Shocking Revelations of Disney Plus Day (2021). It’s odd – and a bit suspicious – that almost every review of Agatha All Along is effusive and full of praise, and oddly lacking any real criticism. While other media outlets may be calling this “the best Marvel series yet,” my opinion is quite different. Agatha All Along suffers from a lack of direction, flat characters, and an uninspired plot, ultimately making it feel like a hollow attempt at storytelling. Unnecessary Focus on Gender Politics One of the series’ biggest missteps is its focus on gender politics. Marvel is known for creating diverse characters without compromising on plot or pacing, yet here the message takes precedence, which distracts from the story.

The emphasis on Agatha’s identity and gender issues feels unnecessary and distracts from what should have been an exciting journey into the darker, supernatural side of the MCU. There’s little reason why commentary on gender should be so pervasive in a Marvel series—it distracts from the magic, excitement, and thrills we expect. Marvel has struggled to create compelling female lead characters that resonate with audiences, and it shows. Both Agatha and She-Hulk seem more interested in proving a point than creating fully developed, complex characters. Marvel’s attempt to push strong female-led series feels so forced that it risks being alienating. Marvel would do better to create these characters with depth and subtlety rather than simply using them to promote superficial themes.

Boring Characters and Weak Storytelling What’s particularly disappointing about “Agatha All Along” is the wasted potential of its lead character. But here, she feels reduced to a one-dimensional version of herself, crushed by weak dialogue and unimaginative motivations. The supporting characters don’t fare any better – each of them feels like a hastily written stereotype rather than a real character with a unique backstory and goals. In an attempt to build a supernatural world, the series also introduces other magical characters, but they come across as bland and forgettable. They lack the depth needed to make the magical aspect compelling, and their superficial characterization makes it difficult to care about their story arcs. As a result, everything feels flat and predictable rather than delving into the mystical side of the MCU.
Ultimately, Agatha All Along feels like another missed opportunity for Marvel
Slow, Uneventful Plot Perhaps Agatha All Along’s biggest flaw is its lackluster plot. The pacing drags and the episodes feel like filler rather than significant parts of an unfolding mystery. Instead of creating suspense, the plot drags along with predictable twists and disappointing scenes. The series squanders its potential for suspense or magical intrigue, leaving viewers with little to keep them hooked. It’s surprising that this series, centered on a character as dark and complex as Agatha, ends up feeling so boring and rote. It’s a series that seems to be universally praised despite obvious problems with its focus and storytelling – a sign that criticism is perhaps actively avoided.
