It’s frustrating to watch a movie that seems to be on a certain trajectory but keeps STUMBLING on the path to get there. This is exactly what happens in this period piece, the coming out/coming of age story in 1938 Italy.
But while this offering apparently approaches its target, it again takes an unexpected left turn and later leads to what the filmmaker himself admits is a deliberately ambiguous conclusion
Writer-director Laura Luchetti’s adaptation of Cesare Pavese’s 1949 novel about an impressionable 17-year-old seamstress (Yile Yara Vianello) who falls romantically for an artist’s model (Deva Cassel) has her own sweet time (and plenty of overlong detours) en route to a seemingly foregone conclusion. Because of this, this is the kind of movie that will leave many viewers scratching their heads and asking, “What’s the point of all this?” The picture is said to be intended to address a subject that was considered taboo at the time the story and book were written, but this goal is not fulfilled nearly as clearly as it could have been.

There are also some passing references to the fascist socio-political conditions of the time (elements not included in the source material), but these are never developed much, so their inclusion seems like a throwaway afterthought. To its credit, "Beautiful Summer" it has great cinematography, well-chosen location settings that showcase the beauty of Turin, and an unsettling soundtrack, but if those qualities are the best you can say about the film, it doesn’t say much about the picture as a whole.
Luchetti’s third feature outing really needs a lot of retooling to make it work, because as it stands it doesn’t work
