Coincidentally, Aidan Turner previously filmed at Chavenage House (the rival monastery)
Line of Events
Keep an eye out for Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as their long-running rivalry comes to an end. The same location was also used to depict Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC TV adaptation of Poldark.
I read The Rivals a few years ago and loved every page!
It’s quite difficult to compare the book and its characters to its TV adaptation, as we all have an idea of how certain characters should look and act. Also, while we can read a book at our leisure, TV has to move at a pace that fits the format and doesn’t drag, so some characters or plots may have to be cut to save time.
We love Declan as much as we hate Lord B!
That said, yes, there are differences from the book, but none are so big that they ruin the overall enjoyment and entertainment value. The characters, especially Aidan Turner as the honest journalist Declan O’Hara and David Tennant as the evil Lord B, are great!
It was great to see Jilly Cooper herself in the restaurant lunch scene
The 80s music is fantastic, although the only part that annoyed me was the high-pitched operatic music at the beginning, which didn’t quite fit. As for all the sex scenes, yes, we could do without them, because we all have imaginations, but this wouldn’t be the book Cooper wrote.
She seemed to really enjoy the series, as much as I did
The last episode ended completely differently than the book, so I hope there’s at least one more season where we see what happens to Taggie and RCB… And of course, we know that the evil Lord B has to be here to wreak more havoc.
