Four kids make a mysterious discovery on their home planet that leads to them becoming lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Jude Law in “Skeleton Crew” and even more stars from a galaxy far, far away.. featured in AniMat’s wacky cartoon. Starring: Silly Old Deadly Bear (2022). Like most kids of the 1980s, I have fond memories of The Goonies, but I’d be lying if I said I thought the new Star Wars content would necessarily go in that direction. I guess after the disappointment of the sequel trilogy and many others – I rate all of Disney’s live-action content except Andor, Rogue One, and the first two seasons of Mando between mediocre and bad – I’m just hungry for good, grown-up, epic Star Wars content. Give me an Andor-like show set in the Old Republic with Jedi, Sith, and Nick Gillard as stunt coordinators in lightsaber fights. BUT… to be honest, Skeleton Crew is fine. It’s not offensive or poorly made; not obviously cheap like a Boba Fett book; not aimless like Mando season 3; no lore as groundbreaking as the sequels and Kenobi; tone deaf as an acolyte. Hurray? This is basically “Star Wars Goonies,” a neat little story about a group of kids having an adventure in the Star Wars universe. The writing so far (from episode 4 onwards) is neat: the effects, costumes and locations look great: everything has a certain charm. I think it was, like Andor, a passion project for its creators and was seen as a small side project by the higher-ups so they didn’t bother getting involved, which is a blessing for Lucasfilm these days. So far, so good. 7.5/10. One Hundred Years of Solitude is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month. For more information, see our December calendar!
